Wet Dream Abnormalities

Most "abnormalities" with wet dreams involve frequency of wet dreams or volume of semen ejaculated.  To learn more about wet dream frequency issues, click HERE.  TO learn more about wet dream volume issues, click HERE.

As seen on the table below, there are other issues that men may experience with wet dreams that actually should prompt a man to see a healthcare professional to ensure something isn’t functioning properly with the male reproductive system.  These can range from having a wet dream without experiencing orgasm, the body attempting to have a wet dream but being unable to ejaculate, painful wet dreams, or even wet dreams that leave discolored semen stains.  This section will focus on these different types of abnormalities.

LACK OF ORGASM DURING A WET DREAM

Some men wake up feeling a little wet but don’t remember having a wet dream.  If the amount is extremely small, it can be caused by the release of pre-ejaculate fluid during nocturnal erections rather than an actual wet dream where semen is ejaculated.  However, this would most likely only be seen in men who produce large amounts of pre-ejaculate fluid since most men produce only a few drops which often either unnoticeable or recognized as pre-ejaculate release.

On the other hand, it’s not uncommon for individuals to sleep so deeply that their brain doesn’t register the orgasmic sensations.  In others, orgasm was part of a dream that was forgotten (along with the memory of experiencing orgasm).  However, if you wake up during ejaculation and feel semen being released and you don’t feel orgasm, it is a good idea to talk to a healthcare professional (if you don’t know what orgasm “feels” like, it’s best to talk to a trusted adult male family member or friend who can discuss that matter with you).

FAILED WET DREAM ATTEMPTS

Wet Dream Process Starts But Doesn't Result in Ejaculation

Perhaps the most frustrating disorder with wet dreams is the inability to complete a wet dream when needed.   14% of men in our study indicated that they could not have wet dreams even though they felt sexually congested and felt their reproductive glands were full.  In many cases, a nocturnal erection coupled with increased sexual stimulation from congested reproductive glands, doesn’t trigger the spinal ejaculation center before the man wakes up.  Typically this involves a wet dream process progressing to a later stage of very high arousal and nearly to the point of ejaculation and orgasm.  At this point, the man wakes up prior to the wet dream coming to completion and ejaculation failing to occur.  Although many men report that they wake up just before ejaculating from a wet dream, this condition occurs when the man wakes up early enough to halt the wet dream process from progressing to ejaculation.  In one of our surveys we surveyed 76 men who reported that they had difficulties having wet dream and asked if difficulties staying asleep long enough to have a wet dream ever resulted in masturbation.  The results of this survey are below:21% of men surveyed indicated that this had been a particular difficulty they had faced with having wet dreams.  In fact, almost 25% of these men indicated that often or regularly ended up masturbating to relieve the congestion caused by a failed wet dream, while 63% of men indicate that they had ended up masturbating once or twice during their life to finish a wet dream that wouldn’t complete to ejaculation on its own.  This can be particularly distressing to young men and adult men who have religious convictions that prohibit masturbation.

Finding the root cause of what is causing these failed wet dream attempts is vital in men who don’t masturbate for personal or religious reasons.

CAUSES

There can be multiple causes for these types of “failed wet dreams” to occur, but the majority seems to affect men with prostatitis, pelvic tension disorder, or prostatic congestion.  In these cases, sexual stimulation can be so intense or pain can start manifesting during a wet dream that prevents a man from ejaculating.

However, some men get anxious when they're about to have a wet dream and that anxiety causes them to wake before ejaculation can be completed.  In some cases, men are aware enough during their dreaming that they are about to have a wet dream and may not want to get "wet" so they wake themselves up.  Others have reported being engaged in sexual activity that went against their moral beliefs so they tried to "get out of the sexual situation" or tried to wake themselves up because they were feeling guilty.

TREATMENTS

Treatment of the underlying condition typically reduces the frequency of “failed wet dreams”, and in many cases eliminates them altogether.  Zinc 25mg at bedtime often helps the body to resorb excess sexual fluids thus making it more likely that a wet dream “attempt” will be successful and also that the frequency of such “failed wet dreams” decreases.  For adult men who wake up early due to overstimulation, 5-alpha reductase inhibitors can not only decrease the sexual sensations, but can decrease sexual fluid production to decrease the need for wet dreams, thus decreasing the frequency of wet dream attempts.  For some men, sleeping medications may help them sleep more deeply so they can sleep longer through a wet dream process, hopefully to our through ejaculation.

Men who have failed wet dreams due to anxiety may need to simply keep in mind that wet dreams are natural and that any associated dreams are often random and the brain simply trying to make sense of the sexual sensations in the genitals being produced by a neurological process.  Men should not feel guilty about the content of their dreams.  Anxiety driven awakenings often occur in men who have an underlying anxiety disorder and treatment of that disorder may help with failed wet dream attempts.  For more on anxiety disorders, click HERE.

Finally, a full bladder is often to blame for some failed wet dreams.  As the bladder fills overnight, the pressure builds applying pressure to the prostate, which can trigger the body to attempt a wet dream when one may not be truly needed.  The urgency from the full bladder may wake a man up prior to ejaculation.  Ensuring that the bladder is empty before bedtime and limiting fluids in the late evening can prevent the bladder from becoming overly full.  In addition, getting up in the middle of the night to urinate can keep the bladder relatively empty thus preventing “unneeded” wet dream attempts.  This is especially true in men who wake up “on the verge” nearly every morning.

14% of men in our study indicated that they felt sexually congested but couldn’t have a wet dream.  This number may actually be considerably higher in men who don’t masturbate since masturbation would relieve the pressure.

PAINFUL WET DREAMS

Perhaps one of the most difficult situations that occur with wet dreams are with painful or failed wet dreams.  In our surveys, 6% of men reported that nocturnal erections and wet dreams had actually been painful.  In these cases, erections or ejaculation can become so painful that it will wake the individual up prior to the spinal ejaculation generator triggering ejaculation.  Erection pain can be caused by a number of causes.  However, painful ejaculation is almost always a sign of prostatitis or pelvic tension disorder.  Even lower back pain or pelvic pain after a wet dream can indicate something should be checked by a healthcare professional.

Taking an anti-inflammatory pain medication before bedtime on nights may help reduce pain during ejaculation should a wet dream occur and may actually help men who wake up before a wet dream can come to completion enough pain relief to help him sleep through it.  However, any type of pelvic pain, especially with erections and ejaculation should prompt a man to visit his healthcare provider.

COLORED WET DREAMS

Finally, issues that involve the color or consistency of semen or semen stains can be concerning.  Normal semen will stain white underwear a slightly yellow color.  This typically washes out well in warm water and soap.  However, if wet dream stains are discolored – red, pink, dark gold, or green then a medication condition affecting the semen may be present.  Click HERE to see causes of discolored semen.
